TIDAF Square
Come and experience the captivating power of visual expression over three days at Koenji Mashita, Tokyo! The TIDAF performance programme brings together a rich variety of creative forms: live painting by a Deaf artist from Australia, a VV (Visual Vernacular) performance by a Deaf artist from Mexico, a collaborative stage featuring Japanese Taiko drums and sign language, and visually captivating Awa Odori. Be sure to experience "art for the eyes" from artists across Japan and overseas.
During non-performance hours, the plaza serves as a relaxing communal space. Admission is free.

Join us for a live painting session by Jaycob Campbell (Gonketa), the artist behind the key visual for the TIDAF. Fusing elements of street art and pop culture, their work vividly depicts the movements and shapes inspired by sign language and gestures through vibrant colors and exaggerated expressions, conveying the powerful force of visual communication. Jaycob continues to express the existence of the Deaf community and the importance of self-determination through his art. Be sure to experience the creative process live!
Jaycob Campbell (Gonketa)
Jaycob Campbell (Gonketa) is a Deaf visual artist from Australia, based in Naarm (Melbourne). His work focuses on the "movement" and "form" created by hands and gestures, exploring the importance of visual communication through bold, vibrant colors and exaggerated expressions. His mission through art is to support self-determination for Australian Sign Language users and the Deaf community, leaving behind a living legacy and cultural heritage, conveying the message to society that "we are always here."

Hailing from Mexico, Eddy will present a captivating VV (Visual Vernacular) performance! VV is a visual performance art form developed by Deaf individuals, utilizing strong visual and physical expression to convey stories and emotions.
Eddy
VV Performer Eddy's early fascination with his uncle's bedtime 'sign stories' (now known as Visual Vernacular) sparked a lifelong dedication to the art form. Today, he is a committed performer and teacher of VV, sharing his expertise across various regions of Mexico and the Americas. He conducts workshops for deaf schools (Guadelajara), Deaf associations within Jalisco, government agencies (Jalisco Cultural Affairs, SEDER, DIF Jalisco, SIOP, IJA, IMISS), and universities (Guadelajara University, UTEG, CUCS), fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for VV. He is also engaged in a personal project, developing a VV series that explores the history of his country. Furthermore, Eddy contributes to the VV community as a creator and online streaming manager for VV Underground, connecting with fellow enthusiasts and expanding the reach of this expressive visual language.

Shuwa no Machi Ren
Formed for the opening ceremony of the TIDAF. For this special occasion, Deaf individuals, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals who use sign language, ranging from beginners to experienced dancers, have come together to present a unique Awa-odori performance incorporating expressions unique to those who perceive the world visually.
Tatsu no Otoshigo Ren
Formed in 1981, sparked by the International Year of Disabled Persons, centered around the Suginami Ward Association for the Hearing Impaired and with the cooperation of the sign language circle "Sugi no Kai." Primarily composed of hearing-impaired individuals, they value visual and bodily expression, dancing while feeling the resonance of sound with their bodies, and participate in the Koenji Awa Odori Festival annually. The group's name "Tatsu no Otoshigo" (seahorse) comes from its meaning of "a fish without ears."
